Walking through childhood, focus on interpretations of my childhood memories. The large-scale paintings in this exhibition feature self-portraits painted in colorful, expressionistic, and abstract environments symbolizing the exuberance and excitement of my youthful imagination. The concept for this project originated from a reexamination of my childhood. This project will be a creative self-study that will enable me to develop positive images of the past. Each painting’s narrative will build on the positive aspects of my formative years, while at the same time replacing negative memories. Utilizing real childhood memories and photos of myself, I will create new paintings that depict a child’s view of the world, filled with fantasy and daydreams. What I am looking for in my work is that elusive place in between happy and sad expressions, contrasting harsh reality against an imaginary dream world. I use many layers of texture and spontaneous strokes of color to express my view of the human experience. In my paintings the environments interact with the subjects helping to tell a story. Some painting the environment is expressed with negative space that will interact with a lonesome subject that will express the freed of emotions. I receive inspiration from memories of events I discover wile explore old family photographs. My current work is focused on self portraits of myself as child.
